National Safety Council Injury Facts- 2008 Edition

  • -Injuries cost $164.7 billion in the year 2006 alone.  At this rate, each worker must produce $1100.00 in goods and services just to offset the cost of work injuries.

  • -$55.3 billion in workers compensation was paid out in 2005 

  • -The largest part of the US workforce are operators, fabricators, and laborers.  These are the people who come into contact with machinery.

  • -Machinery was the second leading source of death in 2005 behind vehicle deaths.

  • -Contact with object/equipment was the leading cause of injury in 2005.

  • -Most costly workers compensation claims are those involving amputation.  Average cost - $27,714.

  • -120 million days of work time lost in 2006 due to injuries alone.

  • -76,940 injuries due to contact with objects and equipment in 2005 alone.
